Twp. of Wash.- PBA Sets Councilman Goetz Straight

Chris Kelley of the PBA Local 206 sets the record straight in a letter to Community Life (8/26/10), regarding Councilman Fred Goetz's assertion that the police "have not made a single concession" at the budget meeting on 07/21/10.  Contrary to Mr. Goetz's allegation, Chris Kelley put forth the facts, outlining the concessions made in the police contract by the PBA.  After the binding arbitration decision by Arbitrator James Mastriani was issued, the township filed an ap read more

Twp. of Wash- Assembly of God v. Township of Washington Settled Out of Court

The Assembly of God v. Township of Washington case that was scheduled to be heard by the Hon. Estella DeLa Cruz of Superior Court, was settled out of court.   The matter was settled for $38,000. to the Assembly of God church (AOG) for its legal fees.   AOG will not be buying the VFW hall.  Taxpayers will be paying the tab for the settlement, plus town counsel Kenneth Poller's fees.  This settlement leaves the VFW in a lurch regarding the sale of its property.  The  read more

Twp. of Washington- P.O.V. on 08/09/10 Town Council Meeting

Lest there be any nervous Nellies out there, worried whether the cupboards will be bare next year, fear not.  Mayor Sobkowicz and her A-team have your back. There's this impression that the state's 2% cap on municipal budgets, effective in 2011, is ironclad.  Taking the lead from Gov. Christie's metaphor of a "tool kit" to manage the economic debacle facing the state, Mayor Sobkowicz has borrowed the term to sooth taxpayer's angst.   While the state's 566 municip read more

Twp. of Washington- Councilman Goetz Flunks Contract Law

When Fred Goetz first appeared on the scene as a candidate for a seat on the town council, there was hope amongst residents, ourselves included, that he would be an asset because he presented himself as a bona fide lawyer.  He could offer taxpayers a modicum of protection from town attorney Kenneth Poller, whose counsel seems to result in costly litigation, which may have been avoided entirely (i.e. the upcoming hearing of the Assembly of God v. Twp. of Washington case in Superior Court).&n read more

Twp. of Washington- Mayor Sobkowicz Makes Excuses for Being Tardy

Which amongst us mere mortals has not known what it is to scramble and meet a deadline?   Given the fact that mayor Sobkowicz was already on the inside track as a council member for nearly 30 years, it is disingenuous for the mayor to claim the 2010 budget was stalled because she and the council members, with the exception of Richard Hrbek, are "new to our positions".  As a mayoral candidate, Ms. Sobkowicz stated her decades of experience on the town council made her read more

Twp of Wash - Why is Mayor Sobkowicz Keeping CFO Jackie Do on the Payroll?

Talking to township residents, who've lived here for thirty to fifty years, is invaluable.  Grocery shopping is less of a chore nowadays because of these spontaneous conversations.  In this heat wave, the air conditioned aisles of the stores is a great place to meet new friends.  Their historical memory of the township and politics lends insight and perspective to our current state of affairs. The past is important to the present and the future. Way back when the township had  read more
