Hillsdale- Update on Impediment to Pedestrian Accessibility: letter to the Editor from Kevin O'Brien

The outdoor vestibule, on a borough sidewalk, was withdrawn by Big Daddy's Pizza. The store owner finally realized, there was not enough sidewalk space. The Americans with Disability Act mandates 5 feet for handicapped passage, so said Mayor Arnowitz.   The proposed vestibule did not support the mandated clearance. It never should have gone before the Council for a vote. The Code Official should have denied the request. On the record, Arnowitz stated "she (the code official) did not read more

Hillsdale- Precedent by Mayor Arnowitz impedes pedestrian traffic on Broadway: Letter to the Editor from Kevin O'Brien of Hillsdale

Mayor Arnowitz spoke of a person in a wheel chair denied access to traverse the public sidewalk in front of Ronnie's bagel shop, at the last Council Meeting. Hillsdale mandates 5 feet of unrestricted access to the public sidewalks in outdoor café areas. A great deal of money was spent to make communities handicapped accessible. Hillsdale took a big step backwards by approving a temporary outdoor vestibule at Big Daddy's Pizza. The structure, designed to limit cold air into the eate read more

Washington Twp.- Paying property taxes for part-time service: dissatisfied resident vents to Pascack People

A WT resident from Hickory St. contacted Pascack People after being given the runaround from the municipality when the paper recycling hauler missed her block last Friday, 12/19/2014.  Normally, the municipality would inform the hauler and the matter would be addresses.  Telling a resident & taxpayer to call the hauler is off-base, when it is the municipality's responsibility.  The retirement of department officials should not result in poor management.  The fault lays n read more

Washington Twp.- Consequences of Sgt. Schultz syndrome: Will Washington Twp. be the next Garfield?

Gasoline contamination is the story that just won't go away in Washington Township.  Members of the public did their best in 2011 to forewarn the governing body of the consequences in ignoring the 2011 site summary from Applied Earth, the Licensed Site Remediation Professional, which acknowledged the plume was extending towards Washington Ave.  The governing body could have exercised due diligence in protecting the public and exercise its authority under the law to shut down the o read more

Hillsdale- Mayor sidesteps the law & bottom line (again): Letter to the Editor from Hillsdale resident

Hillsdale- Paralysis by Analysis: Op-Ed by Kevin O'Brien

Mayor Arnowitz stated in Feb 2014, the sign ordinance was enacted, approved and is law. Despite 5 years of debate, input from several attorneys and thousands of tax dollars in fees to create the sign ordinance, the Town Council shelved it and will now spend more tax dollars rewriting it again. Breach in Rules of Law occur because of neglect, ignorance and administrative abuse.   In Hillsdale a pizza store tied signage to a read more

Washington Twp.- 11/10/2014 Council meeting: Council President promised decision on artificial turf in a month.

At the 11/10/2014 Town Council meeting, residents addressed the governing body about safety concerns at  exit 168, the fallen tree by the culvert in the yard of the infamous white house owned by James Kourgelis of Seasons that's been there for months, traffic on Town Day making it difficult for residents leaving their driveway; but, overall, the meeting was dominated by members of the recreation committee, whose objective appears to be artificial turf for Memorial Field. Washington Twp.- Let the People Vote on Artificial Turf for Memorial Field: Petition for a Referendum attached

With all the major capital projects on the horizon in Washington Township, why is the Mayor and Council pushing through the expenditure for artificial turf on Memorial Field?  Of all projects the governing body could address, why is Memorial Field given priority?  Who benefits from the installation of artificial turf?  The installation of artificial turf benefits only the dominant numerical minority, not the subordinate numerical majority of the people being force fed the will of  read more

Washington Township- 03/18/2014 Zoning Board meeting: First Hartford Realty's withdrawal of CVS application is official (at long last)

At long last, the Township had a Zoning Board since the previous Board was abruptly ousted on the eve of the 01/28/2014 meeting by the Council, which decided to decline reappointing Board members whose terms expired in December 2013.  The Sobkowicz administration and Township Attorney Kenneth Poller could have handled the matter with finesse instead of clumsily dropping the ball, causing a furor.  Had there been no Board by April 2014 to vote on the motion to withdraw the application,  read more
