Washington Township- Planning Board Letter to the Zoning Board: What was the fuss about?

Attached is the letter from the Planning Board, dated 06/19/2012, to the Zoning Board of Adjustment regarding the vote approving the variance for a new non-conforming use of the Sky Trading application.  At the Zoning Board meeting in June 2012, the Board declined to read the Planning Board letter into the record after several Zoning Board members expressed their righteous indignation.  After reading the letter, the fuss made seems disproportionate to a benign and languid gesture. read more

Hillsdale- What is the Borough Hiding?: Op-Ed by Kevin O'Brien

The Borough of Hillsdale has flatly refused to provide access to the e-mails of Code Official Keith Durie for a two week period in March. Keith Durie is the same official who failed to support the state mandated written inspection records and retention of records for 10 years. While the State Legislature has created laws to support open access to government records, Hillsdale refuses to honor those  read more

Washington Township- Notes on 06/19/2012 Zoning Board Meeting: Board Votes Against Diesel Fuel, Planning Board Letter Blasted as Political Pandering

The Zoning Board voted on the last item of Sky Trading's long wish list, the sale of diesel fuel. Much to the relief of concerned residents, the Board voted overwhelmingly against diesel fuel; Vice-Chairman Miran and Board Member Merkle voted in favor of diesel fuel.  The Board's decision to grant use variances for a new non-conforming use, the intensification of the existing non-conforming use and a bulk variance for its wish list. was memorialized in a resolution. Washington Township- Sent on a Wild Goose Chase By the Zoning Board: Appealing the Decision

After the Zoning Board voted in favor of granting Sky Trading’s application for use variances on 05/15/2012, Township residents asked the Zoning Board office about the procedure for appealing the municipal decision, which will be finalized at the next meeting on 06/19/2012.  It was nearly a week before the Zoning Board Attorney responded to a resident’s query.  In short, the resident was told to get a lawyer and file the appeal with Superior Court because the Township was read more

Hillsdale- Update: Orchard Street Project and 71 Parkview Dr.

At the Planning Board meeting on 06/06/2012, the lawyer for 100 Park Ave. Associates informed the Board that his client was relocating the four affordable housing units, necessitating a change in the architectural plans.  Originally, the affordable housing units were segregated from the general population and located on the ground floor by the utility room for the heating and air conditioning system, as noted in my posting dated 05/04/2012.  The applicant will return at the next hearin read more

Hillsdale- Borough Officials Ignore Endangerment to Public Health & Safety: Op-Ed by Kevin O'Brien

Hillsdale- Borough Officials Ignore Endangerment to Public Health & Safety: Op-Ed by Kevin O'Brien
On May 30th, the Hillsdale employee who allowed a home to fall into a disgusting condition littered with car parts, gas jugs in view, dirty diapers peppered the front lawn and a rear seat of a van was used as lawn furniture, appeared at Municipal Court in Montvale. Despite being employed by Hillsdale and a property owner, this borough employee requested a public defender, thus delaying any resolution.   After speaking with the C read more

Hillsdale- Dilapidated Property Listed As Municipal Building Office: A Liability For Hillsdale?

Hillsdale- Dilapidated Property Listed As Municipal Building Office: A Liability For Hillsdale?
It is inconceivable that Borough officials would endanger public health and safety at a site listed as its Municipal office for the Welfare Director, as evidenced by the attached document.  This site is also the home of the Welfare Director.  Since the Borough has an office at 71 Parkview Dr, the Borough should ensure the property is in compliance with Borough ordinances and state mandates. Although Borough officials continue to treat this matter involving a Borough official with kid g read more

Washington Township- Predestination: Zoning Board Vote on Sky Trading

The die was cast long before the Zoning Board voted on 05/17/2012 to grant the use variances sought by Sky Trading. The fate of the Township's future and the public good was a foregone conclusion from the beginning of the Sky Trading saga. In 2009, Sky Trading filed an application with the Planning Board to approve the transfer of ownership.  According to the application, Sky Trading would continue operating the site as a gas station with a repair business.  Property maintenance is read more

Washington Twp.- Zoning Board Votes in Favor of Sky Trading Application

After two long years of Zoning Board meetings, the moment everyone had been waiting for finally happened tonight when Board members voted on Sky Trading's application to "modify" its 5 Star Gas Station and replace the repair business with a convenience store.  Long story short, on the D-1 variance, which pertains to the convenience store (constitutes a new use), the Board voted 5-2 in favor of the store, stating the store would be an improvement over the auto repair aspect of read more

Washington Twp.- C-1 Waterway is Game Changer

Thanks to Christopher Statile’s diligence, the Acting Engineer on the Zoning Board proceedings on the CVS/First Hartford Realty application, the public good was served.  Since coming onboard in March 2011, in three reports written to the Board regarding the application, he stated the unnamed tributary on the site, owned by James Kourgelis of Seasons, is a C-1 waterway. Christopher Minks, attorney for Northgate in December 2011, picked up the ball and argued the case should not be all read more

Washington Twp.- Op-Ed by Linda Murphy on C-1 Waterway at CVS Site

It is confirmed and the letter is available in the Township offices.  What is an aquifer?  How does this affect the substantial modification of the sites surrounding it?  What is an environmentally critical area? An aquifer is a geological formation capable of yielding a significant amount of water to a well or a spring.  C-1 waterways are protected by a stringent set of rules.  This affects the property from Northgate south to the corner of Washington Avenue, southboun read more

Hillsdale- Op-Ed by Kevin O'Brien on Hi-Density Housing Proposal: also read attached letter about Rules of Evidence to Planning Board Chairwoman

Will Hillsdale Planning Board approve a 36 unit high density apartment complex on Orchard Street? In questioning the applicant's expert witness, the Board refused to allow public records into the record during cross examination. Public records, under the Rules of Evidence, are admissible in Court.   The applicant planner used wandering generalities to justify the project. National and state figures combined with some magic was used to to impress t read more

Twp. of Washington- Notes on 04/17/2012 Zoning Board Meeting: Sky Trading & CVS/First Hartford Realty

The first part of the 04/17/2012 Zoning Board meeting began with the closing summation by the Attorney for Sky Trading.  He did what he was paid to do.  For 60 minutes, the Board and the public listened to the attorney put the best spin possible on the applicant's proposed plan, which could only lead to increasing "substantial detriment to the public good".  Attached is the brief filed by Sky Trading's attorney with the Zoning Board.  Also attached is the transcri read more

Hillsdale- Op-Ed by Kevin O'Brien: A Hillsdale Resident's Analysis on Shared Dispatch Services with County

Hillsdale Town Council is working on a cost benefit analysis for the dispatch operation. If based purely on cost, the dispatch system may well move to the Bergen County Dispatch Operation in Mahwah. Woodcliff Lake, Park Ridge and other communities have made similar difficult financial decisions and moved their dispatch operations. A Hillsdale Fire Department Official raised the need for interoperability of radio systems during an emergency situation. If the lack of inoperabil read more

Hillsdale- Junkyard in Hillsdale: Ordinance Violations Ignored By Officials

Hillsdale- Junkyard in Hillsdale: Ordinance Violations Ignored By Officials
The following op-ed and photos are from Kevin O'Brien.  It's a disappointment to see a crack in Hillsdale's façade as a picture perfect town with diligent officials.  Enforcement of local ordinances is essential to public health and safety. The property at 71 Parkview Dr. is owned by a Borough official. Are enforcement officials showing preferential treatment? G.H. Dirty diapers and other debris peppered the front yard. Vehicles in disrepair sit in the driveway and  read more

Twp. of Washington- Notes on 03/26/2012 Council Meeting: Meeting Hijacked by Rec Mob

It was an SRO crowd at the 03/26/2012 Council meeting.  Proud parents of the boys from the Little League were there to see their children honored by the Mayor.  Unfortunately, the achievement of these children and their families was undermined by the Rec Mob, who used the opportunity to emotionally blackmail the governing body.  Other members of the public are restricted to five minutes when addressing the Council, as was the case with Rosa D'Ambra at the previous meeting on 03/1 read more
